Patients at the Thanarbaid Health Care Centre

Welcome!

Welcome to the Thanarbaid Health Care Centre. The centre is located in the village of Thanarbaid (pronounced TAHN-ar-bide) in rural Bangladesh. It is set in an elevated and wooded area interspersed with wet rice and pineapple fields. The centre serves an extremely poor population which would otherwise have almost no health care. It exists because of its 75 dedicated staff members, all of whom live and grew up in the surrounding area. Many of them were at one time helped by the centre with their own needs. For the past 20 years Dr. Edric Baker from New Zealand has headed up the Programme. Through weekly staff training, dedication, fundraising, and prayer, he has helped the Programme grow into what it is today. The Programme is not without its problems. Though, without its existence, diseases such as malnutrition and diarrhoea would still be rampant in the surrounding area. The Programme belongs to the Church of Bangladesh (Anglican and Presbyterian), and its support comes from people like you--people who care about the Programme, who care about what it does, and who want to see its work continue. No one earns more than a day labour wage, even though the average doctor in Bangladesh earns well over 10 times more. This is amazing to see, especially when many of the staff come from very poor families.
